Tompkins Square Label 10th Anniversary

What a cool experience it was to create this poster for the 10th Anniversary celebration of Tompkins Square Record Label in NYC. This show has such a dream line-up of musicians, and now that it's one month away it's finally almost here!

The first time I came across Peter Walker's beautiful 1968 album "Second Poem to Karmela..." some years ago in the basement of Plan 9 Records, I remember pulling it for a listen based purely on the appeal of its lovely cover art of swirling hand-drawn illustrations around a black & white photo filtered in pink. All too often this particular "pretty cover, must listen!" judgement call doesn't work out as well as hoped, but this record quickly became one of my favorite and most listened-to finds during those days, and I would never have imagined a time that I would be carefully painting his name out in watercolor for an actual event in 2015!

The case is the same with Michael Chapman, who I had the great pleasure to see when he came through town a few years ago and played two mesmerizing sets that conjured up magic both dark and beautiful with his particular style on guitar. And as a note to those also in the Richmond area, I hear he will be coming back through town again to play on October 7th at Black Iris - mark your calendars!

So the ethereal, transporting sounds of Peter Walker's "Second Poem" and his earlier "Rainy Day Raga" from 1966, Michael Chapman's fantastic "Rainmaker" (1969), and Ryley Walker's latest album "Primrose Green" remained steadily on repeat during the process, with the hopes that some of the spirit within their music would be injected into the artwork.

Please come if you will be in New York on October 9th, it's sure to be a special and once-in-a-lifetime event!! Truly perfect sounds for the changing season and another Autumn on the way.

Something about circles has been so appealing lately, to the point where I included two new paintings of them in my own show that just opened at Quirk Gallery (more on this soon!). I may have to do a bit of meditating on what could be the personal current significance with this particular geometric connection, but for now I wanted to share some artwork by others (from a variety of eras, and that I haven't already posted about before) that focus on a prominent roundness. They are everywhere!

French set!

Last Thursday evening, I had the pleasure of joining my friend Tracy on her radio show Cause and Effect (airing every Thursday from 7-9pm EST on Richmond Independent Radio WRIR 97.3 fm) for our second annual All-French show in honor of Richmond's French Film Festival - the biggest of its kind in the whole United States! Tune in to the podcast linked below for two hours of '60s & '70s French pop, soundtrack, psych/prog, late '70s/'80s synth & cold wave and more!! And for anyone out there from France who may be reading this and happen to listen: please accept my most heartfelt apologies for any (many) mispronunciations! The set list for the show can be found via the link as well. Collecting vintage French records is a love of mine, so getting to do a show like this is truly a treat!!

⪥⪥⪥⪥ Listen here! ⪥⪥⪥⪥

Here I am enjoying some of the tracks in the studio, taken by Tracy!

In Hiding

It's been a quiet month or so on this blog, but certainly the opposite of that in real life! Here's a peek at some of the things I've been up to...

This has been some time ago now, but here are some shots of the Supersketch event I took part in back in November: my sketch-in-progress is the small image in the middle of the last row.

(Photos taken by Diana Mathews at Quirk Gallery, where the event was held.)

And some images from December 2nd and 3rd, a weekend packed with two art & craft fairs:

table

I wanted and meant to take more photographs of both events, but as with many things approached with the best intentions, it just didn't happen. I'm so glad I could participate though; it was wonderful talking with other vendors and people stopping by the table.

Hoping to do so much more with these and other designs in the coming year...

And last but not least in this little photo roundup, this past Sunday my boyfriend and I were able to Guest DJ on our friend Michael Murphy's radio show Mellow Madness on community radio station WRIR 97.3 fm.

We'd both done guest segments with him separately but not with each other, so this was a real treat for us. We have an occasional DJ night together called the Cosmic Hum where we play records and do liquid light projections with overhead projectors, so we decided to keep things easy and fit within that theme for the music we picked out for the show. We both like lots of international music from the '60s & '70s so we played a variety of French, Japanese, Brazilian, Portuguese, Turkish tracks and my favorite 45 from what we were able to pick up on our trip to Morocco last April! That find was a seriously lucky treasure, since it's not only my favorite of the bunch but also happens to be the least beat up as well - none of them are in very good shape. We had no way to listen to them beforehand so it was all a matter of chance!

I think the radio show was recorded, so hopefully I'll be able to post the link to the podcast of it here at some point...

I can't believe it's almost 2012!!!

A Watched Clock...

Friday arrives at last, not a moment too soon!
So hard to believe the summer is so quickly fading, but there's always something to be happy about when greeting the annual changes: the nicest part now is focusing on the prettiest hues of all the rusty reds, burnt oranges and earthen browns of the coming autumn!

Today the brown is in my morning coffee,
in orange, the color of the sofa when I walk in the door for the weekend,
and red the tail lights of cars we'll follow as we drive out into the city on time that is our own.

Free days, free nights

Cheers to the upcoming weekend, and as it's a long holiday weekend for me, I'm especially excited - though I don't really have any plans other than relaxing and taking some bike rides in the sunshine.

I just a made a mix for the first time on 8tracks, and figured I'd actually just stick with eight tracks to keep it simple and not too long. In honor of posting here, it's named after this blog! Plus - - - the name fits the feeling I think, since all of the tracks are from the 1960s-70s.

Fingers crossed for lots of good creative energy in the coming month ! ! ! ... . . .
