New on Society6!

Over the weekend, I added several pieces to a new page on Society6. It's exciting to see what some of the drawings and paintings look like on tangible objects such as cases and skins for iphones and ipods, and there are also stretched canvases, regular art prints and framed prints!
Hopefully I'll be able to get some laptop skins up soon as well, and definitely some brand new designs and patterns that will be unique to that site alone.






I started saving some favorite images that I've come across on this site so far, and am looking forward to sharing them in a future post! So many beautiful designs from artists all around the world... definitely an inspiration.

In Hiding

It's been a quiet month or so on this blog, but certainly the opposite of that in real life! Here's a peek at some of the things I've been up to...

This has been some time ago now, but here are some shots of the Supersketch event I took part in back in November: my sketch-in-progress is the small image in the middle of the last row.

I wanted and meant to take more photographs of both events, but as with many things approached with the best intentions, it just didn't happen. I'm so glad I could participate though; it was wonderful talking with other vendors and people stopping by the table.

And last but not least in this little photo roundup, this past Sunday my boyfriend and I were able to Guest DJ on our friend Michael Murphy's radio show Mellow Madness on community radio station WRIR 97.3 fm.



We'd both done guest segments with him separately but not with each other, so this was a real treat for us. We have an occasional DJ night together called the Cosmic Hum where we play records and do liquid light projections with overhead projectors, so we decided to keep things easy and fit within that theme for the music we picked out for the show. We both like lots of international music from the '60s & '70s so we played a variety of French, Japanese, Brazilian, Portuguese, Turkish tracks and my favorite 45 from what we were able to pick up on our trip to Morocco last April! That find was a seriously lucky treasure, since it's not only my favorite of the bunch but also happens to be the least beat up as well - none of them are in very good shape. We had no way to listen to them beforehand so it was all a matter of chance!

I think the radio show was recorded, so hopefully I'll be able to post the link to the podcast of it here at some point...



I can't believe it's almost 2012!!!

Gold and Black

Just wanted to post one of a few new pieces freshly listed in my etsy shop!

The two black and gold images were so much fun to do. I love color so much, but the simplicity of two tones is really appealing - plus gold ink/paint is amazing. It's one of the first things I remember being drawn to in Art Nouveau and Art Deco design and illustration, that shining gilded effect. I have several ideas floating around for other ways to use these images, which is exciting to think about experimenting with!

I wish there were more hours in the day; I wish I could make things all the time.

New Beginning

This photo was taken last fall when G and I took a Saturday afternoon drive out east from the city and had a picnic in one of the many Civil War battlefield sites that scatter the Virginia countryside. It was hardly larger than a small stop off the road and we had it all to ourselves, us and the ghosts.

I remember the air being crisp but warm in the sunshine, the gift of the season. And while we didn't linger too long, we really were there at the perfect hour: that magical time when the light is starting to shift slightly and things start to become sort of d r e a m l i k e. Shadows change and then there it is, that golden haze all over everything.

It's the most beautiful cloak for all of mother nature's glamour shots, and it makes dazzling appearances in the exposures of all those old photographs drenched in the soft colors of age. It's luminous and nostalgic, dreamy and magical, trancelike and illuminating.
Somewhere I want to be!

Here I've started a new spot to connect and share, welcoming back my old friend Text after posting nothing but images over on my tumblr and having long abandoned my last blog.
As I've recently experienced in my personal life, new beginnings (no matter how small and regardless of what nature) are often perfect prescriptions.
There are so many lovely rounded archways of new doors out there ready to be opened!
